When they show you who they are…
believe them.
Hamas invaded Israel on Saturday morning. Israel was stunned; gangs of terrorists roamed the countryside literally raping & pillaging for the better part of the weekend. The Israeli Defense Forces weren't the only ones taken by surprise: western media outlets were caught flat-footed, as well.
For the first twenty-four to thirty-six hours, in my personal viewing, Twitter was the best source of information, and that information came via videos uploaded by Hamas themselves. The videos were a throwback to an earlier age of barbarism: murdering civilians, abducting children, raping women. Hamas was proud of all of this, bringing their captives back into Gaza to be cheered before adoring crowds.
We got to see the raw footage: no western media "contextualizing" events for us. No poltiical elites describing events in terms of comforting euphemisms. No prize-winning academics employing circumlocutions to prop up their pet theories. No, the Twitterati found themselves in front-row seats witnessing who Hamas is & what they do.
This morning, my timeline is filled with self-loathing posts from former liberals in good standing who reflexively "stood with Palestine" since they seemed to be the oppressed in that particular situation.
