On Saturday, I noted that the reliably Democratic partisans at legacy media outlets had a real problem on their hands: they are now on the record in their belief that Biden is unfit to serve, but the party establishment (to say nothing of the Biden campaign) are uninterested in changing horses.
One of the more delicious aspects of this crisis has been watching the media struggle to explain how those who presume to lecture the rest of us on "disinformation" missed something the rest of the country had seen for a long time. This morning brought confirmation that they've settled on a story: they were deceived by the Biden administration, you see:
For those unacquainted, Memeorandum is a link aggregator heavily focused on legacy media: if you want to know how those who's information funnels consist of The New York Times, The Washington Post, CNN & MSNBC see the day, you can check here. The Federalist is a reliably populist site that rarely makes an appearance– the fact that they're at the top of the page with an article on Biden's, ahem, moral failings is significant. The media is now attempting to throw Biden under the bus.
Which sets up a really interesting problem for them down the road, should Biden stay in: can they really spend from now until November attacking the Democratic nominee? They would soon be hearing from irate subscribers, as well as their own staffers, accusing them of helping to elect Trump. On the other hand, should they revert to form & start once again providing "cover" to the Biden campaign (to use Matt Yglesias' term), they'll look like utter hypocrites.
Regrettably, I expect no introspection on their part as to how they wound-up in this mess.
Right on schedule, just as I was proof-reading this post, Paul Krugman once again steps up to the plate:
