Nine hundred eleven homes were lost in the CZU Lightning Complex fire in 2020. Roughly two-and-a-half years later, 167 permits to rebuild have been issued, per this article in the Santa Cruz Sentinel. Last month, at a county Board of Supervisors' meeting, Bruce McPherson (Supervisor for the Fifth District, which includes most of those lost homes) said in regard to those numbers that "the county isn’t standing in the way, people just aren’t proceeding" (per the same article).
In response, the San Lorenzo Valley Post has just published a collection of open letters to McPherson, many detailing the ways in which the county has stood in the way of rebuilding.
I hope the Post will push for some kind of response, but I fear McPherson will continue to be mystified by the lack of progress.
